This adventure had everything walking a canoe through downtown, loading it and the dogs on to the ferry, navigating the powerful Straits of Mackinac, and a moment on the water we’ll never forget.

Walking a Canoe Through Downtown Mackinac Island

Yes… this actually happened.

At the timestamp 6:04 in this episode, Kyle is carrying our canoe straight through downtown Mackinac Island past crowds, bikes, and horses.

Not your typical tourist scene.

But when you're chasing adventure, sometimes the path there looks a little different.

Arnold Transit assisted us in getting our canoe to the island and then we made our way to the shoreline near the historic Grand Hotel. We launched directly from the beach an unforgettable starting point for what was ahead.

Canoeing the Straits of Mackinac: Not for the Inexperienced

The second we pushed off, the tone of the adventure shifted.

The Straits of Mackinac connect Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, creating strong, constantly moving currents.

Add in ferry traffic and fast-moving boats, and suddenly you're not just paddling you’re navigating.

What Makes the Straits Challenging

• Powerful, shifting currents
• Constant commercial ferry traffic
• Wind exposure that builds waves quickly
• Limited margin for error in a canoe

It took multiple attempts to successfully cross and navigate the Straits. Every move required intention, timing, and trust in each other.

It’s beautiful but it demands knowledge and respect.

The Biggest Lake Trout of Kyle’s Life

Out on the water, Kyle hooked into something big. At first, we didn’t realize just how big.

But as the fight went on, it became clear this fish was BIG and when he said, "I don't know if it will fit in my net" I almost didn't believe him.

When he finally brought it in, it was the biggest lake trout of his life. The canoe was buzzing from adrenaline and excitement.

Out there, in the open water of the Straits surrounded by islands, this moment was everything you could ask for and to be honest unexpected based on the recon we had gotten before our trip.

Fishing in a place like this isn’t just about catching something. It’s about where you are when it happens.

Why This Is One of the Most Unique Ways to Explore Mackinac Island

There are a lot of ways to experience Mackinac Island.

But very few will:

• Take you through downtown with a canoe on your shoulders
• Put you face-to-face with the raw power of the Straits
• Give you moments like landing the biggest trout of your life

This wasn’t the easiest way to explore.

But it might’ve been the most meaningful.
