There’s a special stretch of time in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula when fall gives way to winter.

The woods grow quiet, snow begins to settle into the landscape, and the lakes start locking up with ice. It’s the season when muzzleloader deer camp and ice fishing traditions overlap, creating the perfect excuse to spend long days outside and evenings at camp.

For this adventure, we spent seven days winter camping in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, combining deer camp life with time on the frozen lakes. The trip brought cold mornings, snowy woods, ice fishing action, and the rhythm of living outdoors.

Arriving at Winter Camp in the Upper Peninsula

The first day of any winter camping trip is about building camp and settling into the environment.

Winter camping in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula requires a little extra preparation compared to traditional camping. Everything needs to be planned with cold temperatures and changing conditions in mind.

We hauled in our gear, stacked firewood, and set up our winter shelter. Once the basics were in place, camp slowly began to feel like home.

A wood stove kept the shelter warm while the snow-covered forest surrounded us. With camp established, the focus of the trip became simple: hunt the woods and fish the ice.

Before any successful hunt begins, time has to be spent learning how the animals are  moving through the landscape.

With fresh snow covering the ground, the woods gave us the perfect opportunity to follow fresh tracks that crisscrossed the ridges and low areas, revealing where deer had been feeding, traveling, and bedding down.

We quietly moved through the deep snow, following game trails winding through the Upper Peninsula woods, looking for the places where deer movement naturally funneled together. Fresh sign in the snow helped us identify the most active travel routes. Once we located those trails, the next step was finding the right position to set up. This was the first time I have ever been scouting in the snow, it was exhilarating.

The woods are quiet. Snow reveals fresh tracks and every movement through the forest feels deliberate.

Each morning started before sunrise.

Coffee brewed while the sky slowly brightened through the trees. Kyle would head out into the snowy woods with the muzzleloader, following sign and moving carefully through the forest.

Even on mornings when deer didn’t appear, the experience itself felt rewarding. Winter hunting slows everything down and allows you to notice the small details like fresh tracks crossing the trail, snow falling from pine branches, and the peace that only winter can bring.

That quiet rhythm is a big part of what makes deer camp in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula so special.

Life Around Camp

While hunting and fishing were the main focus of the trip, camp life always became the heart of the experience.

Winter camping creates a natural rhythm to the day.

Wood needs to be split and stacked. Snow collected. Meals are cooked on the stove. The dogs explore the snowy woods surrounding camp.

As we loose track of time outdoors, the last light disappearing behind the trees while the temperature drops for the night is the signal that the day has passed.

With the days shorter and the nights cold, we have extra time inside the tent. Lucky for us, this is a time when some of our best recipes are formed and put to the test. On this trip, we put together the most incredible creamy venison stew i've ever tasted.

Living outdoors for a full week simplifies life in a way that’s hard to recreate anywhere else.

Ice Fishing in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

As the week continued, we began spending more time on the frozen lakes.

Ice fishing in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is an experience that never gets old. Once the ice conditions allow it, the entire adventure shifts from the woods to the wide open lake.

We drilled holes through the ice, set ice fishing tip-ups across the frozen surface, and settled in to watch for flags to start flying.

As soon as we had our tip-ups in, the flags started popping up, We had luck with pike and as the sun started to set we were able to pull a dandy of a walleye and a jumbo perch through the ice.

There’s something uniquely satisfying about fishing through a hole in the ice. You just never know what you're going to pull through the ice.

Those moments of excitement break up the quiet patience that defines ice fishing.

Winter Weather in the UP

Spending a full week outdoors means experiencing whatever the Upper Peninsula decides to throw your way.

Some days were calm, cold, and beautiful, with soft winter light stretching across the snow-covered forest.

Other days reminded us how brutal winter can be.

Cold temperatures and blowing wind tested our gear and patience, but those challenges are also part of the adventure. Winter camping requires flexibility and a willingness to adapt when the weather shifts.

And at the end of a long day outside in the cold, stepping back into camp and warming up by the stove always feels like a small victory.

The Rhythm of Seven Days Outdoors

By the middle of the trip, life had settled into a simple and steady routine.

Wake up.
Make coffee.
Head into the woods.
Fish the ice.
Cook dinner.
Watch the sun disappear behind the trees.

Seven days living this way clears your head in a way that modern life rarely allows.

There are no schedules or distractions, just the natural rhythm of the outdoors guiding each day.

After seven days of cold mornings, ice fishing, and life in the UP wilderness, we packed up camp already looking forward to the next adventure with a fridge full.
